Overview

This Uganda wildlife safari package takes on a wonderful journey to experience Uganda’s wildlife, primates, and rich culture. This trip starts and ends in Kampala, but takes you on a journey to explore Uganda’s natural beauty.

Your trip starts with a visit to Jinja, for some adventurous white water rafting in Jinja, the source of the Nile. We’ll then head north towards Murchison Falls National Park, with a stopover at Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary to walk with the rhinos.

We’ll continue to Murchison Falls where we can see many animals on classic game drives and boat cruises on the Nile. After Murchison Falls, you will go to Kibale National Park where you can see chimpanzees in the wild and visit the nearby craters and caves.

We shall then continue to Queen Elizabeth National Park for more game viewing, and tracking of tree climbing lions before going on to Bwindi Impenetrable.

Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is well known as a home for the endangered mountain gorillas, and you will be able to meet these gentle giants after a hike in the thick rainforest. You will spend 1 hour with the gorillas before heading back to the starting point.

You will then go to Lake Bunyonyi for a day of slowing down before heading to Lake Mburo National Park for some more wildlife, especially zebras. Your journey will continue to Kampala with a stopover at the equator line for some nostalgic photos and souvenirs.

Detailed Itinerary

Here is the full day-by-day itinerary for this tour

Day 1: Airport pickup, drive to Kampala

Our driver/guide will be waiting to welcome you to Uganda at Entebbe International Airport when you arrive. This will be followed by a transfer to your hotel in Entebbe or Kampala for your accommodation.

Your guide will brief you about the Uganda Wildlife Safari to make sure you are fully prepared to embark on your journey of experiences that starts the following morning.

Day 2:White Water Rafting in the Nile, Jinja

Early in the morning, after your breakfast, you will be transferred to Jinja for a white water rafting experience which can either take a full day or half-day depending on your choice.

This is one of the most exciting rafting trips on earth which goes up to 31 km and includes a fantastic barbeque lunch and complimentary drinks after the trip. In the evening, you will be transferred back to Kampala.

Day 3:Drive to Murchison Falls National Park

Today, you will begin your Uganda wildlife safari with a panoramic drive northwest (approx. 8-9 hrs) through the famous Luwero Triangle. Stopover at Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary for Rhino Tracking and later have lunch in Masindi Town.

In the afternoon, continue to Murchison Falls National Park, and you will have a chance to stop by the ‘top of the falls’ where you can see the Nile’s beauty perfected.

The Nile compresses from 50 meters to a 7-meter canyon – the devil’s cauldron, with a beautiful rainbow, displayed near the water. Transfer to your accommodation where you will get to enjoy the sunset.

Day 4: Safari Game Drives in Murchison Falls National Park

Early morning, your guide will take you for a wildlife safari game drive on the northern bank of the River Nile. Here, you will spot Elephants, Lions, Cape buffalo, Rothschild’s giraffe, hartebeest, Waterbuck, Oribi, Bushbuck, Bohor reedbuck, hyena and if you are lucky, the leopard.

Return back to your lodge for breakfast and lunch. In the afternoon, head for a boat cruise upstream on the calm Victoria Nile to the base of the falls stopping just tens of meters from the “Devil’s Cauldron”.

Have a chance to marvel at the hippos floating in the water, and crocodiles and you will see many animals over this 19 km stretch including elephants, waterbuck, and Uganda Kob.

For bird-watching enthusiasts their many chances of seeing bird species like the Goliath heron, Egyptian goose, Brown pelican, Red-throated bee-eater, various kingfishers, Fish eagles, cormorant, and the rare shoebill stork. After the boat cruise, you will return to your accommodation.

Day 5: Drive to Kibale Forest National Park

After early morning breakfast, you will be transferred to Kibale National Park via Hoima town and Fort Portal (approx. 6 hours). Along the way, you will enjoy the views of lush green countryside, tea plantations, past traditional homesteads, and farms.

Fort Portal town rests in the shadows of the fabled Mountains of the Moon – Mount Rwenzori.

Day 6: Chimpanzee Tracking in Kibale National Park

After early morning breakfast, your guide will lead you to Kibale National Park to enjoy a guided primate walk in search of chimpanzees and 12 other primates including l’ Hoestes, Red colobus, blue, red-tailed monkeys, brown monkeys, and grey-cheeked mangabey.

The guide will provide detailed explanations, not only on primates but on all the forest fauna and flora, and will ensure that your walk is informative and enjoyable.

After lunch, you will visit the community and take a walk in Bigodi Swamp – which is the home of the great blue Turaco bird. Later return to your accommodation for dinner & overnight stay.

Day 7: Visit caves and craters. Drive to Queen Elizabeth National Park.

After breakfast, you will start the day with a cultural tour of the ‘Amabere ga nyina mwiru’ caves – a great historic site located 10km from Fort Portal town.

You will be accompanied by an informed guide who knows more about this place and remember to carry along a flashlight, hiking boots, long trousers, etc since you are going to enter the caves. Once you’re done with this tour, you then hike the explosion crater lakes surrounding this area.

Later return back to Fort Portal town for lunch and also visit the Tooro Kingdom Palace. In the evening, drive to Uganda’s second-largest park, Queen Elizabeth National Park while enjoying changing views of the mystical Rwenzori Mountain ranges. (drive time: approx. 3-4hrs)

Day 8: Wildlife Safari in Queen Elizabeth National Park

After breakfast, you will go for an early morning wildlife safari game drive in this park. With the massive Rwenzori Mountains as a backdrop, this provides excellent opportunities to see lions, leopards, giant forest hogs, cape buffalo, elephants, defassa waterbuck, Uganda Kobs, Topi, and bushbuck.

Queen Elizabeth National Park’s diverse ecosystem of grassy plains, tropical forests, rivers, swamps, lakes, and volcanic craters is home to an incredible abundance of wildlife.

After lunch, you will go on a 2-3 hour boat cruise on the Kazinga Channel and into Lake Edward. This trip passes through possibly the highest concentration of hippos and many animals may be seen drinking at the water’s edge.

This launch cruise offers an excellent platform for photography, bird watching, and game viewing. The prolific bird life is colorful and stupendous with more than 600 different species.

Day 9: Ishasha Sector of Queen Elizabeth National Park.

Early morning after your breakfast, you will be transferred to the southern sector of the park – Ishasha, which has mammalian species including the Giant Forest Hog and the legendary Tree-climbing Lions.

Day 10: Drive to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park

After early morning breakfast, today we drive from Ishasha to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park.  This is a 4 – 7 hours journey passing through the “Switzerland of Africa” area known as the Kigezi Highlands, with its terraced hillside and winding roads to the Bwindi forest. We will have a stop-over on our journey in Kabale town for lunch.

Day 11: Gorilla tracking in Bwindi Impenetrable N.P.

It is gorilla tracking day and you will wake up early to have breakfast and be at the park offices at 7:30 am. You will be briefed by the park rangers on all the procedures before you can start your trek.

In groups of 8 and the rangers, you will go into the forest in search of the mountain gorillas that call this dense rainforest home. Whereas the gorilla trek can be quite challenging, meeting the gorillas will make all that sweat certainly worth it.

Upon finding the mountain gorillas, you will spend one (1) hour with them after which you will be led back to the starting point by the park ranger. The gorilla is a shy and peaceful animal and it is an unforgettable experience to watch and photograph them as they interact.

You will spend your afternoon relaxing at the lodge and enjoying the views of the forest.

Day 12: Transfer to Lake Bunyonyi in Kabale.

After breakfast, your tour guide will transfer you from Bwindi to Lake Bunyonyi which is also located in the Kigezi region.

Here you will get to enjoy swimming, dug-out canoeing, sunbathing, hill climbing or mountain bike riding, and cray fishing.

Day 13: Drive to Lake Mburo National Park

After early morning breakfast, you will drive to Lake Mburo National Park (approx. 5 hours) . Enter the park through the Nshara gate. Afternoon game drives along the Lakeshore track.

Lake Mburo will be the last national park you visit on this Uganda wildlife safari and you will enjoy the abundance of the small gem.

With its own system of game trails and cleared walkways the “Kigambara Loop” offers interesting guided lakeside walks. Find here herds of zebra, Cape buffalo, and eland. Oribi and topi are easily approached.

Along with a wildlife safari game drive, many visitors enjoy a boat trip on Lake Mburo because it provides even more opportunities to spot wildlife.

Birdwatchers will enjoy more than 250 species of birds found in Lake Mburo including Papyrus Gonolek, Brown-faced Lapwing, Carruther’s Cisticola, the extraordinary White-winged Warbler, and Bare-Faced-Go- Away bird.

In the afternoon enjoy a boat ride on Lake Mburo and get quite close to herds of hippos.

Day 14: Wildlife game drive in Lake Mburo, drive to Kampala

After breakfast, proceed for a wildlife safari walk in Lake Mburo National park. An armed ranger will escort you to make sure you are protected.

It is possible to see Lake Mburo’s hyenas in their cave if you are willing to get up early.

It is incredible to see zebra grazing alongside the long-horned Ankole cattle peaceably. Return for lunch which should be taken leisurely enjoying the view of the lakes in this park.

Drive back to Kampala stopping at the Mpigi Royal Drum Makers en route where you will be able to watch ceremonial drums being crafted using methods passed down through generations. There will also be time to stop at the equator for photographs.

We will reach Kampala in the early evening.

Day 15: Full day Kampala city tour

After breakfast proceeds for a city tour of Kampala. This is inclusive of an English-speaking guide.

You will see places like the Uganda Museum, Craft Centre, Owino Market, Kibuli Mosque, Namirembe Cathedral, and other areas of cultural interest like the Buganda Kingdom Palace (Bulange).

After your Kampala city tour, you will be transferred to Entebbe International Airport for your flight back home. This will mark the end of your Uganda wildlife safari holiday.
