The Summer 2026 Gorilla Permit Tracker: Why August is Selling Out and Where to Find Hidden Slots

Why August is Selling Out and Where to Find Hidden Slots

As of February 2026, the data from the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) and the Rwanda Development Board (RDB) confirms what industry experts predicted: August 2026 is on track to be the highest-demand month for primate tourism in history.

With the global shift toward “purpose-led travel” in multi-country East African circuits, gorilla permits for August, the crown jewel of the dry season, are becoming the hardest currency to secure in the safari world. At Primate World Safaris, we’ve analyzed the current Summer Gorilla Permit Tracker Permit Heat Map to show you exactly where the bottlenecks are and, more importantly, where the remaining opportunities lie.

1. The August 2026 Permit Heat Map

In August, the “Big Three” factors- perfect trekking weather, the Great Migration in the neighboring Mara, and Northern Hemisphere school holidays- create a perfect storm of demand.

Sector/Park

Popularity Rating

Availability Forecast (as of Feb 2026)

Buhoma (Uganda)

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Sold Out. Only single-slot cancellations remain.

Volcanoes (Rwanda)

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Critically Low. High-end lodge buyouts have claimed 90% of slots.

Rushaga (Uganda)

⭐⭐⭐⭐

Limited. Best chance for groups of 4 or more.

Nkuringo (Uganda)

⭐⭐⭐

Scattered. Hard terrain keeps some casual tourists away.

Ruhija (Uganda)

⭐⭐⭐

Moderate. The “Photographer’s Choice” still has mid-week gaps.

Mgahinga (Uganda)

⭐⭐

Hidden Gem. Often, the last place to sell out.

2. Why August is a “Permit Fortress”

In 2026, the scarcity isn’t just about the number of gorillas; it’s about the Sector Allocation System.

  • The Quota Reality: There are only about 160 permits available per day across Uganda. In a month like August, which sees over 15,000 inquiries for those 4,900 total slots, the math doesn’t favor the latecomer.
  • The “Lodge-Permit” Lock: Many luxury lodges in Buhoma and Volcanoes NP pre-purchase blocks of permits for their guests a year in advance. This means that while the UWA portal might show “Zero,” a few slots are often held in private lodge inventories.

3. Where to Find the “Hidden Slots.”

If your heart is set on August 2026 but you haven’t booked yet, do not panic. There are three “Insider Loops” to secure a permit:

A. The “Ruhija Pivot”

Ruhija is often overlooked because it lacks the “fame” of Buhoma. However, in 2026, it is the most reliable sector for late bookings.

  • The Benefit: It is home to the Oruzogo and Kyaguliro families, groups that are famously photogenic and often found in lighter canopy areas.
  • The Strategy: Book a lodge in Buhoma (only a 1.5-hour drive away) but secure your permit in Ruhija. You get the luxury accommodation you want with the permit that actually exists.

B. The “Mgahinga Wildcard”

Mgahinga Gorilla National Park has only one habituated family: the Nyakagezi group. Because there is only one family, many operators forget to check it.

  • The 2026 Status: As of this morning, Mgahinga has several “Green” days in mid-August. This park also offers the bonus of Golden Monkey trekking, which we discussed in our Primate Age Limits guide.

C. The 14-Day “Cancellation Catch.”

In 2026, the UWA cancellation policy (as shown in our Permit Logistics table) means that travelers who cancel 30 days out lose 75% of their payment. However, at the 14-day mark, many “distressed” permits are released back into the system by agencies that couldn’t sell their full allotment.

  • Our Role: We monitor the UWA live portal every 4 hours. If a slot opens, we can “snag and tag” it for you instantly.

4. 2026 Pricing Refresher

Remember that permit prices are fixed. If someone offers you an August permit for less than these rates, it is likely a scam.

  • Standard Trek (Uganda): $800 USD
  • Habituation Experience (Uganda): $1,500 USD
  • Standard Trek (Rwanda): $1,500 USD

Note for 2026: Rwanda continues to offer a $1,050 Promotional Rate for trekking during the “off-season” (Nov-May), but this does not apply to August. Expect to pay the full $1,500 in the summer.

5. The “Fly-In” Advantage for Late Bookings

If you find a last-minute permit in a remote sector like Nkuringo, the drive from Entebbe can be 10 hours. In 2026, the most successful “last-minute” travelers are using Aerolink flight connections.

  • The Move: Fly from Entebbe to Kisoro Airstrip. This puts you within 45 minutes of the Nkuringo and Rushaga sectors, saving you a full day of travel and ensuring you are fresh for the trek.

6. How to Use the 2026 “Permit Tracker.”

At Primate World Safaris, we provide a live update service for our clients. If you are looking for August 2026 slots, follow this protocol:

  1. Select a 3-day Window: Don’t aim for a specific Tuesday; give us a “window” between August 10th and 15th.
  2. Be Sector-Agnostic: Whether it’s the steep hills of Nkuringo or the valleys of Rushaga, the gorillas are equally majestic.
  3. Deposit Ready: In August, a permit that appears at 9:00 AM is gone by 9:15 AM. We need your passport scan and funds on standby to click “Buy.”

7. Conclusion: The Reward of Persistence

August 2026 will be a historic month for the mountain gorilla. The forests will be vibrant, the weather will be crisp, and the encounters will be life-changing. While the “Sold Out” signs are appearing across Bwindi, the forest is vast, and slots are constantly shifting.

Are you still looking for your August 2026 permit?

We currently have access to a small block of “Operator-Held” permits in the Rushaga sector for the second week of August.

Would you like us to put a 24-hour “Soft Hold” on two of these permits while you check your flight availability?
