This Rwanda budget safari holiday takes you on a fulfilling journey to see Rwanda’s primates like chimps and gorillas, as well as the scenic Lake Kivu.

The trip starts off in Kigali and heads south to Nyungwe Forest National Park where you will explore the natural rainforest in search of chimpanzees and other species of monkeys.

From Nyungwe, we’ll continue to the shores of Lake Kivu where you will explore the islands in the lake and the beautiful surrounding and local culture. We’ll leave Kivu and go to Volcanoes National Park.

Volcanoes National Park is well known for gorilla trekking and this is where you will have your personal encounter with the endangered mountain gorillas. After your hike through the rainforest, you will spend around 1 hour with the gorillas before heading back. We’ll leave Volcanoes and head to Kigali where your safari will end.

Detailed Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival in Kigali, Drive to Nyungwe Forest

Our guide will pick you up from your hotel or place of residence and drive you to Nyungwe Forest National Park.

It’s a 5 hours journey so your guide will make stops on the way at various places of interest including local markets, and the traditional palace of Rwanda’s Former King in Nyanza. Visit the Botanical Gardens in Butare and a cultural museum before going for Lunch.

In the afternoon drive past green fields of tea scattered across the hillsides and the small wooden houses unique to the areas surrounding Nyungwe Forest.

Day 2: Hiking in Nyungwe National park

Early morning, we’ll go on a guided Chimpanzee walk in the forest to see a variety of animals and some of the three hundred bird species found here, which include the Rwenzori Turaco and black and white casqued hornbill.

Go on an escorted walk in search of large groups of colobus monkeys – sometimes as many as 400 in a group. Return late afternoon back to your lodge.

Day 3: Drive from Nyungwe to Kibuye on Lake Kivu

Today drive via Kibuye on the stunningly beautiful Lake Kivu to Gisenyi; through beautiful countryside, crossing valleys full of agricultural produce. Kibuye which is one of the three resort towns on Lake Kivu is the most beautiful, arriving at lunchtime.

After Nyungwe, most participants will welcome those relaxing moments on the shores of Lake Kivu! Take a boat out on the lake to see the various islands.

Swim in the refreshing, bilharzia-free waters of the Lake or stroll about in the nearby villages rambling across a number of hills. Spend the rest of the day at leisure.

Day 4: Drive from Lake Kivu to Volcanoes National Park

Return to Kigali or pass via Gisenyi to Ruhengeri. Drive north to Kinigi via Ruhengeri. Enjoy the rolling hills for which Rwanda is well known.

Accommodation: Hotel La Palme, Virunga Hotel, Mountain Gorilla View Lodge

Day 5: Gorilla trekking in Volcanoes National Park

After breakfast, you will report to the park headquarters where your driver-guide will accomplish the necessary formalities for you.

You will meet your ranger guide for a briefing about the greatest animal experience ever. Then we will drive you to the slopes of one of the Virunga volcanoes for your gorilla trekking experience.

After the trekking, lunch at your lodge or at Ruhengeri, and in the afternoon, if time allows, an excursion to explore the beautiful lakes in the region: Lake Bulera & Ruhondo. An excellent view of the Virunga chain of Volcanoes can be seen while there depending on weather conditions.

Day 6: Drive to Kigali, Departure

Track the golden monkeys and after your lunch, return to Kigali and later be transferred to the airport for your flight.

This will mark the end of your Rwanda budget safari holiday.
