Overview

This Gorillas and Masai Mara Safari takes you on a memorable journey of exploring Uganda’s wildlife, chimps, gorillas, and Kenya’s incredible Masai Mara.

The Gorillas and Masai Mara Safari starts off in Uganda with a visit to Jinja for some high adrenaline white water rafting on the river Nile. You will then transfer to Kibale Forest National Park where you will see chimpanzees in their natural habitat.

You will then visit the crater lakes in Fort Portal before proceeding to Queen Elizabeth National Park where you will go on wildlife game drives to see the animals of the park.

From Queen Elizabeth, you will continue to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park for gorilla trekking. You will hike through the thick forest to find gorillas, and then spend around 1 hour before going back to the starting point.

After tracking your gorilla trekking experience, you will drive to Lake Mburo National Park for some savannah wildlife and an afternoon boat cruise. We’ll then travel to Entebbe with a stopover at the Uganda equator line for some photos and souvenirs.

You will fly from Entebbe to Masai Mara National Reserve in Kenya. In Masai Mara, you will go on several game drives to see the plentiful animals that live in this wonderful savannah.

If your safari is during the migration, season, you will get to experience the wonderful chaos of the great wildebeest migration.

On the last day, you will transfer from Masai Mara to Nairobi for your onward flight.

Here is the full day-by-day itinerary for this tour

Day 1: Arrival in Entebbe, transfer to Kampala

Our driver/guide will wait for you at Entebbe International Airport and welcome you to Uganda. You will then be transferred to your hotel for the night.

Day 2:Transfer to Jinja, then back to Kampala

White water rafting in Jinja

After your morning breakfast, you will be transferred to Jinja for White Water Rafting. Depending on your choice, you can enjoy a full day of rafting or half a day.

You will also visit Jinja town and check out some craft shops for your souvenirs.

Day 3:Drive to Kibale Forest National Park

After your early morning breakfast, your guide will transfer you to Fort Portal town; a 5-hour journey from Kampala with stop-overs along the way.

This town nestles in the shadow of the Rwenzori Mountains so be sure to take in the amazing views.

Day 4: Chimpanzee tracking in Kibale National Park

Facts About Chimpanzees

Early morning after breakfast, you will visit the Kibale forest to track the Chimpanzees and 10 other primates including l’ hoestes, red colobus, blue, red-tailed, and gray-cheeked mangabey.

The guide will provide detailed explanations of primates, forest fauna, and flora. This primate walk is both informative and enjoyable.

In the afternoon, visit the Bigodi swamp and the community around the Kibale Forest National Park.

Day 5: Amabere ga Nyina Mwiru Caves, Crater Lakes & transfer to QENP

Today after breakfast early in the morning, we will have a cultural tour of the ‘Amabere ga Nyina Mwiru’ caves located 10 kilometers from Fort Portal town and also hike to the explosion craters surrounding this area.

Return back to Fort portal town for lunch, in the afternoon visit the Tooro Kingdom palace. In the evening we drive to Queen Elizabeth National Park for about 2 hours following the mystical Rwenzori Mountain ranges for much of the journey.

Day 6: Game Drive in Queen Elizabeth National Park

Small Group Adventure Safari
After breakfast, you will go for an early morning game drive in the park with the massive Rwenzori Mountains as a backdrop that provides excellent opportunities to see lions, leopards, giant forest hog, Cape buffalo, elephants, defassa waterbuck, Uganda Kobs, Topi, and bushbuck.

Queen Elizabeth National Park’s diverse Eco-system of grassy plains, tropical forests, rivers, swamps, lakes, and volcanic craters is home to an incredible abundance of wildlife. In the afternoon, your guide will take you for a unique 2 to 3-hour boat cruise on the famous Kazinga Channel and into Lake Edward.

This boat trip passes through possibly the highest concentration of hippos. Many animals may be seen drinking at the water’s edge.

This will give you excellent opportunities for photography, bird watching, and game viewing. The prolific bird life is colorful and stupendous with well over 550 different bird species.

Day 7: Drive to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park

Today we drive through the Kigezi highlands region of Uganda also known as the “Switzerland of Africa” providing views of terraced hillsides and winding roads to Bwindi Impenetrable forest which is a 4 hours journey.

Day 8: Gorilla tracking in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park

About Mountain Gorillas

The Bwindi forest is a spectacular and incredibly dense rainforest that offers a dramatic steeply forested landscape. You will arrive at the park headquarters early in the morning (7:00 am) for the briefing by the UWA staff before going to the trek.

Don’t forget to carry along your tracking gear which includes raincoats, jungle boots, and more. The trekking will take a couple of hours (2 -7 hrs) depending on how far the gorillas might have moved.

In groups of 8 people, your guide will lead you through the numerous pathways created for the tourists, and eventually, you’ll find your way to the rare & shy gorillas.

A certificate is awarded by UWA at the end of every gorilla trekking experience.

Later relax at your lodge which will give breathtaking views of the park.

Day 9: Drive to Lake Mburo National Park, Afternoon Boat Cruise

Check out after breakfast in the morning for a 4-hour drive to Lake Mburo National Park with a stopover in Mbarara town for Lunch. This is the best place in the country to see zebras.

Lake Mburo has 5 lakes and is mainly savannah with scattered acacia trees. The park features animals such as impalas, elands, roan antelopes, reedbucks, klipspringers, and topis, as well as buffaloes and hippos.

Adjacent to the park is the ranches of the Bahima (Ankole) tribe, who herd the famous long-horned Ankole cattle that are a common sight here. Take an afternoon boat ride on the Lake to see a variety of birds and hippos too.

Day 10: Drive from Lake Mburo to Entebbe

Early morning after breakfast, go for a safari walk in the park accompanied by your guide and later return to your lodge for Lunch. Check out in the afternoon and depart for Kampala which is 3 hours away with a stop-over at the Equator line.

Day 11: Transfer to the Airport and fly to Masai Mara.

After breakfast, at your will and flight schedule, your guide will transfer you to the airport in time for your flight to Masai Mara with Aero link.

Day 12: Wildlife Safari in Masai Mara National Reserve

Wildebeest Migration in Masai Mara

Depending on the Wildlife migration patterns and the weather, early morning breakfast is followed by a full day of game drives within the reserve. The Masai Mara is famous for its black mane lions and the annual wildebeest migration.

This is probably one of Kenya’s most visited reserves with an extraordinary density of animals including the Big five and many other varieties of plains game. The Mara River cuts through the Mara and Serengeti ecosystems giving life to both reserves before finally pouring out into Lake Victoria.

Impressive and most notable is the wildebeest, zebra, and gazelle instinct-led migration from the Serengeti in Tanzania to the Mara in Kenya. This journey is coupled with numerous obstacles which makes it even more magnificent.

You will have a picnic lunch and continue with the game drives arriving at the lodge in the evening for a well-deserved rest and a hot relaxing shower.

Day 13: Wildlife Game Drive in Masai Mara

After Breakfast, another game drive as you follow the Migration of the wildebeests cross the Mara River.

Day 14: Drive from Masai Mara to Nairobi/JKIA

You will be treated to an optional final early morning game drive after which you will return to the lodge for breakfast. Embark on your safari back to Nairobi at around mid-morning.

We shall have a brief stopover at Narok town and later proceed to Nairobi city and to the JKIA for your onward flight. This will mark the end of your Gorillas and Masai Mara Safari in Uganda and Kenya.
